When death occurs

Losing a loved one is an overwhelming experience, and at some point, most of us will face the difficult task of arranging a funeral.

From the moment you get in touch, our aim is to take care of every detail on your behalf, so you and your family can focus on what matters most during this challenging time.

If someone passes away at home

When a death occurs at home or in a care home, the doctor should be notified first. They will provide the necessary certificate and approve the removal of your loved one. Our team is available around the clock to support you with this.

If someone passes away in hospital

In the event of a death in hospital, a doctor there will issue the certificate. Please contact us on 01204 302000 to arrange a convenient time to meet and discuss all necessary arrangements. If a certificate cannot be issued, the Coroner will be involved, and they may request a post-mortem or an inquest. While permission from the Coroner is required to proceed with the funeral, we can begin preparing arrangements in the meantime.

Registering the death

A death must be registered in the district where it occurred, usually within five days, and before the funeral can take place.

The registrar will need some basic information about the person who has passed:

  1. Full name (including middle name)

  2. Date and place of death

  3. Date and place of birth

  4. Occupation

  5. Home address

The following documents are usually required:

  1. National Insurance number (if known)

  2. Birth certificate (or details of place of birth)

  3. Marriage certificate (if applicable)

  4. Death certificate

Once registered, the registrar will issue a document authorising the burial or cremation, which we need before the funeral can proceed. Copies of the registration can also be obtained for legal or insurance purposes (for banks, building societies, or post office accounts, for example).

Our dedicated team is here to guide you through every step and answer any questions you may have.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us for further support and assistance.
